Driver Training

Below are the dates for the first half of 2012’s 4x4 driver training courses. There are single day courses as well as the more involved two day accredited training courses.

The accredited courses are run strictly according to the unit standard 254135 which has been set out by various roll players throughout South Africa, making it the only recognized course available.

The course is controlled by TETA, who will also issue with proof of accreditation sometime after the completion and passing of the course. Course fee is R750.00 for members and R1600.00 for non members.

If you have any questions, or you want to book yourself on a course, please contact me.

Next one day course is Saturday 14th January. Booking is essential as numbers are limited.

The next accredited course is 28th & 29th January, followed by 31st March & 1st April.

It is requested that all new members participate in the 1 day course before going on the first Sunday outing, this makes it easier for yourself, because you will know how to operate your vehicle in off road conditions, and at the same time make it easier for whoever is leading the convoy.

More courses will be offered later in the year depending on the requirements of the membership.  Please book early.

Driver Training

Umzinto Training Day - October 2009A bit about the new unit standard training.  The course content has been put together by a team of dedicated 4x4 driver trainers from throughout the Republic working together with SAQA. Once you have attended the course, the mountain of paperwork then gets sent off to our service provider who in turn moderates it and then sends it on to TETA. TETA once happy with everything will then forward you the driver your certificate.  Now why all this drama for a simple 4x4 course you may ask? Well it’s all quite simple really and in fact, probably long overdue. No matter where you do your training in S.A., everyone will be working according to the same unit standard, which is a good one. The department of tourism and the environment will also be satisfied with those drivers who have passed the course and received their proof of accreditation are now responsible 4x4 drivers who are not out there to rip up the environment. Because the instructors need to be accredited assessors and instructors which costs money, it does prevent the fly by nighters from trying to make a quick buck by presenting some under rated course in someone’s back yard. In the longer term all land owners who charge a fee for driving on their property will have certain rules and procedures to follow, of which one would be to request the proof of a driver’s accreditation before driving on their land. All government owned trails will be required by law to request this by 2014. I go along with all that andhttp://image96.webshots.com/196/1/11/8/2615111080105251844kDSYPW_fs.jpg think that it’s way over due. Who knows you may not get into Moremi or Chobe in the future without the accreditation. It’s not going to happen overnight, in fact 2014 is the target date for everyone being thrown about at the moment, but you know what we humans are like, we leave everything for the last minute. Avoid the rush dear members. Geoff Joubert, Gauteng branch’s experienced 4x4 accessor will be on hand for the first course just to make sure that everything runs smoothly and according to plan and the way that TEATA wants it to happen.

Although recovery is not part of the unit standard, you will do recovery work, which includes puncture repair work and hi lift jacking.

Course fees:  First course special based on a first come basis. R750.00 per person. There after R750 per person per two day course. These costs are for club members only, non club members R1200.00 per person.

There are a number of campsites, B&B’s and self catering establishments in the area, let me know if I can be of help if you are looking at staying over in the area.

The Four Wheel Drive Club of Southern Africa KZN offers a very comprehensive driver training program. Module one would basically be driver awareness, vehicle knowledge and the impact these vehicle have on the environment.

Module two is a more comprehensive training course when completed you will receive a certificate from a recognised institute TITA. For insurance purposes. Some insurance companies even reduce your premiums if you have attended one of these courses (will be out sourced to a TITA registered facilitator)

In terms of our club, I will be presenting a driving course module 1 for off road driving which is basically looking into the vehicle capabilities, environmental awareness and driver awareness.

Should anyone need to produce a certificate of competence for insurance purposes I do suggest you speak to me in order for me to outsource the training to a registered TITA instructor.

With regard to the club's driver training, we only run the one course which combines what is generally available in the basic and advanced course offered by the registered guy’s.  We start off with a lecture on the basics of the vehicle, the principles involved and different driving techniques, then go on to actual driving of the different obstacle types, finishing off with a chat about recovery.

The Driver Training Course is aimed at owners of four-wheel-drive vehicles with low range. 4WD vehicles without low range and two-wheel-drive vehicles with diff-locks will not be able to complete the course

You will be required to have completed a Driver Training Course before joining us on club events, or driving the obstacle course and in any case it makes good sense to complete the training if you are going to drive any vehicle anywhere off-road.

If there are any club members whom have not yet done a Driver Training Course remember that as this year it is required of all members to have a certificate to be able to join us on club outings.

The KZN branch of the 4 Wheel Drive Club welcomes you to attend the 4x4 Driver Training.   This module is a complete and in depth program in the art of "walking" your 4x4 over rough / steep / soft terrain, with the highest regard for personal safety and vehicle sympathy with total respect for the environment.

The one-day course is designed for 4x4 drivers who wish to enhance their driving skills. It provides a brief introduction to your 4x4 and practical skills are developed on a variety of diverse training areas.

The course will cover the most significant aspects of off-road driving, and the knowledge and skills gained will equip you to cope with 99% of the situations that you are ever likely to encounter.

Having completed this course, you will be able to drive with greatly increased respect for your own, and your vehicle's ability.  You will be able to tackle obstacles, outings and expeditions with confidence.  You will avoid mishaps and accidents, minimise maintenance costs and extend the economical life of your 4x4.

Your greatest gain will be maximizing the pleasure, adventure and excitement that your investment in an off-road vehicle represents.
