The Association of All Wheel Drive Clubs of Southern Africa

Introduction.

The Four Wheel Drive Club of Southern Africa is a family orientated recreational 4x4 club that stands for responsible off-road driving. Our club is involved with family outings, off-road challenges, driver training, camping trips and environmental conservation.

The Four Wheel Drive Club is the largest four wheel drive club in Southern Africa and is not restricted to any single type of vehicle. The club offers prospective first time 4x4 vehicle buyers guidance on which 4x4 will be most suitable for them by drawing on the experience of veteran members. For new members who already own a 4x4, it is an opportunity to learn about their vehicle, off-road driving and a good place to meet like-minded people whilst having fun at the same time.

The Four Wheel Drive Club was established in 1972 and now consists of nine individual branches of approximately 4000 members. The KZN branch was established in 1987 and has approximately 110 members at present.

Each branch produces its own monthly newsletter filled with information on activities in the area. Members are encouraged to tell of their tales, trials and tribulations in the newsletter. The KZN’s newsletter is called “ Traction”.

Over the years many life long friendships have been formed around an evening campfire, so why not join us.

Family Outings.

At least once a month, a day outing to areas where the terrain requires nothing less than a 4x4 vehicle is arranged. On every outing there is an experienced driver/organizer that is in control to ensure that obstacles are negotiated safely and with care to the environment.

This is where members develop their driving skills on various terrains and get to see experienced drivers in action. Longer trips to further a field places, which will include overnight camping are also organized. These trips are to Mooi River, Kokstad, Kosi Bay and even as far as Lesotho and Mozambique.

Off-Road Challenges.

Motorsport SA sanctions one of our off-road challenges a year, which are held at various venues. There are three different levels of competition National, Provincial and Regional. Competitors compete in various classes for points and prizes. Even if club members do not compete it is a fun day with a lot of action to be seen.

Driver Education.

Driver Training courses are offered by the club and are required to be attended by all members. These are daylong courses where you will be provided with a booklet covering both mechanical and terrain information. After a theory class, it is out to put your newfound knowledge to the test. These courses are an essential starting point for many members. Both women and men are welcome. You will be presented with a certificate at the next meeting. There are also advanced driver training courses offered.

Environmental Awareness.

As mentioned our club is aimed at responsible off-road 4x4 activities and therefore have a Code of Conduct for all members.

Involvement In Other Events.

Through out the year the club is involved in other events such as Cars In The Park, Lions Wheels Expo and the Getaway Expo. These are all community based events which not only promote the club but where the public can come and see what we do and meet some of our members. There are also other events where club members make themselves and their vehicles available to assist in any area they may be needed.
